Lindsay Ford – Lonely Doug

Posted by

Part of the Awkward+Awesome children’s book series.

Although Lonely Doug stands alone, that doesn’t mean he is actually lonely. He has a big job and stands to teach us so much about life, history and the environment of B.C’s old growth trees. This is a good book to help talk to kids about trees, forest ecosystems and the environment. It is also a good book to speak about feelings of being alone or feeling lonely.

What if Doug was cut down? What if Doug were the last Christmas tree? What would that look like? What would that mean for the world?

Part of the Awkward+Awesome children’s book series celebrating unlikely heroes.

Suitable for Kindergarten to Grade 4.

This is the children’s book about one of Canada’s largest trees. One of the oldest known trees in B.C., Lonely Doug is Canada’s second largest tree and one of the few standing old growth trees that is only guesstimate at being well over 1000 years old. Lonely Doug was set to be clear cut some time in history, but was saved by a logger who felt that Lonely Doug was too big and too old to cut.

Lonely Doug now stands on Vancouver Island as a symbol for the environment and the current issues surrounding clear cutting and destruction of old growth ecosystems. Old growth trees are detrimental to the surrounding life that exists around it – from the other trees, to the air and the animals living around it, Lonely Doug holds centuries of wisdom and power.

Although Doug stands alone, doesn’t mean that he is actually lonely. In fact, standing alone has made him stranger. He has a big job and stands to teach us so much about life, history and the environment of B.C’s old growth trees. This is a good book to help talk to kids about trees, forest ecosystems and the environment. It also helps talk to kids about feeling lonely or being alone.

What if Doug was cut down? What if Doug were the last Christmas tree? What would that look like? What would that mean for the world?
