Susan Marie Conrad – Inside My Sea of Dreams

The Adventures of Kami and Suz

This children’s book is adapted from my adventure memoir: Inside: One Woman’s Journey Through the Inside Passage (Epicenter Press). I’d been kayaking long distances for many years before I decided to paddle the Inside Passage. Once I made up my mind to go on this adventure, I spent nearly a year preparing for it. Most folks were supportive of my far-reaching goal. And the naysayers? When someone tells you “it can’t be done,” remember: those are their limits, not yours. Whatever makes your heart zing—do that. I really did kayak the Inside Passage. And I really did feed my donkey carrots! I do have a kayak named Kami; it’s short for Chamellia. She gracefully carried me and all my supplies through the 1,200-mile ribbon of water known as the Inside Passage. My journey took 66 days, during which time I lived in a wetsuit, paddled marathon distances, forged friendships with quirky people, and pretended not to be intimidated by seven-hundred-pound grizzly bears and forty-ton whales. It was a journey of transformation—because the true adventures of our lives are always inward. This journey taught me to follow my dreams and trust that we are all infinitely capable of accomplishing anything we want to in life—if we simply believe.

Author Biography

Susan Conrad is a classically shy introvert trapped in an extrovert personality, as well as a long-distance paddler who can’t be left alone in the same room with dark chocolate. She grew up in New York State’s Catskill Mountains, evolving into a rough ‘n tumble—although quite clumsy—tomboy with minimal athletic ability. Her parents tried to instill a deep fear of water in her so she’s convinced that a combination of sheer stubbornness, rebellion and naiveté eventually led her to solo paddle the 1,200-mile water trail known as the Inside Passage, which winds its way from Washington State to Alaska.

It was a profoundly life-changing experience and Susan loves sharing her fears, epiphanies, and lessons learned with others to empower them to truly ‘get’ that they are infinitely capable of accomplishing anything they want in life! Passionate about the positive impact that adventure and sport can have on the lives of women, Susan is an ambassador for Women Who Paddle, and uses her human-powered journeys as a platform to inspire and enable women to get outside, and get exploring. She’s also an EXPED adventure ambassador and sponsored athlete.

Involved in the paddlesports industry for 30 years, Susan holds an American Canoe Association (ACA) Open Water Coastal certification and enjoys sharing her passion, both in the classroom and on the water, with novice through advanced paddlers.
Susan has authored two other books about the Inside Passage. Inside; One Woman’s Journey Through the Inside Passage is a five-time award-winning memoir and Wildly Inside; A Visual Journey Through the Inside Passage is a photo book featuring the places, spaces, and faces of the Inside Passage. She’s also contributed to Sea Kayaker, Canoe and Kayak, Adventures Northwest, Harbor, and Figure magazines. Countless newspapers, guidebooks, and historical journals also feature her work.
