Donna M Bishop – Liv Unravelled

A Novel

“Wow – what a rich, imaginative, insightful book! I enjoyed reading it and felt it was a privilege to see a little bit of the life of the character Liv and her place and time. The story invites us, through its personal authenticity, to think about the experiences of women, of immigrants, of mothers and daughters and wives, neighbours and friends, in a new way ¬¬¬– through the “third eye” of the experience of a contemporary woman’s struggle. The story is really two stories, or multiple stories. The protagonist’s journey to self-understanding and independence comes through her exploration of the stories of others – enabling her to see the connectedness between generations, between spirit and body, the imagination and the ability to transform suffering. The main story threads, by intertwining and reminding us of the vulnerability of women and children to “men with power” – the social disparities that have threatened, historically, women’s safety and autonomy – and the gifts within the magical resources of community, curiosity and compassion women have shared for centuries.”

Author Biography

Donna Bishop was born and raised in Cloverdale, B.C and has resided in the Thompson Valley in the interior of B.C. Canada, for the past 40 years.
She attended Thompson Rivers University, back when it was known as Cariboo College in the 1970s and again in the 1990s, obtaining a bachelor degree with honours in social work. Filling her elective plate with writing and literature courses provided excellent relief from the realities of social welfare and gave her the energy and inspiration for creative expression.
During her 10-year stint in the 1980s as a farmer in Little Fort, Donna worked as the North Thompson correspondent for the Kamloops Daily News and organized craft fairs and children’s festivals in her tiny town before returning to the city and her academic studies. Throughout her 25-year social work and clinical counselling career, the creative, clear use of words has served her goal of meeting the needs of her clients. Donna is a mother of five, grandmother of six and a social activist with decades of service in Canada and overseas. Now, as a retired social worker, she has taken up the pen with several stories in her mind’s eye, eagerly waiting to be told.
With a passionate appreciation for the gorgeous, diverse landscape of B.C. she loves kayaking, hiking, and cycling. Since early childhood she has been one to find green and grassy knolls, under trees and alongside rivers, lakes and oceans whenever possible while writing and reading. She has gained skills and confidence, taking in local creative writing workshops and writer’s festivals, learning from authors such as Gail Anderson- Dargatz, Ami McKay, the late Richard Wagamese, and Karen Hofmann in recent years, and has been attending a hugely supportive weekly writing group, The Cauldron.
